Oxonica Ltd is a nanotechnology company that span out of the University of Oxford in 1999 and is focussed on delivering tailor-made solutions to customer needs, with a portfolio of nanomaterial based new products. Oxonica has raised £4 million in its latest investment round. The new money will be invested in sales and marketing activities, which are expected to include the development of major commercial partnerships. This follows a funding round in 2002 when the company raised £4.2 million from a syndicate of leading financial and corporate venture capitalists, including: VCF Partners, BASF Venture Capital GmbH, NextGen Partners LLC, Northern Venture Managers and Generics Asset Management of The Generics Group.
Oxonica previously raised smaller capital amounts from business angel investors, who were successfully matched by OION, enabling Oxonica to develop to the stage where it could attract VC funding.
Chief Executive, Dr Kevin Matthews, says
"OION eased the way to raising crucial business development funds, which left the company well-placed to attract substantial further investment from venture capitalists."
The National Science and Technology Council in the US estimates that the market for nanotechnology products and services in the US will reach $1tn by 2015, of which $340bn per year will be generated from nanomaterials.
